A collaborative landscape-based programme in partnership with utility companies and supply chain operators.
Building Resilient Farms Through the Sustainable Landscapes Programme
The Sustainable Landscapes programme, launched in July 2018 with Yorkshire Water, brings together groups of forward-thinking arable farmers to explore sustainable farming practices that positively benefit soil health, improve water quality and provide a route to reducing emissions and sequestrating atmospheric carbon.
Working across the whole rotation as production moves from one crop to another from year to year developing farming techniques that improve soil quality and structure, at the same time improving water quality, biodiversity and farm profitability.
These techniques not only can improve soil fertility reducing the crop’s fertiliser requirements but can also hold water up in the soil organic matter, reducing the impact of drought as well as helping with flood attenuation and reducing soil erosion.
Building soil health to reduce nitrogen leaching
Healthy soils store and recycle nitrogen efficiently, reducing leaching and protecting water quality.
Introduce new farming methods to support farm profitability
Adopt innovative, sustainable practices that cut costs, boost yields, and strengthen long-term profitability.
Improve soil structure to prevent soil erosion and flooding
Soil structure increases water infiltration and stability, reducing erosion and the risk of flooding.
“I enjoy the interaction with other like minded farmers who are passionate about making their soils better and exchanging ideas. It’s great we can go to other farms, look at soil, look at what practices they are doing and hopefully bring onto our farm.”
“Future Foods Solutions, through the Sustainable Landscapes Programme have been pivotal in delivering cultural change in farming practices. Their approach of demonstrating real world benefit to farm businesses through meaningful engagement and support, is enabling the improvement we are looking for in some of our most sensitive catchments.”
One of the major benefits is the Sustainable Landscapes programme has brought together farmers where we can learn from each other”
